You can’t talk about the America’s Cup without talking about the New York Yacht Club. And you can’t talk about the Club without mentioning the Cup. The oldest trophy in international sport is an essential part of the club’s legacy, but Terry Hutchinson, Skipper of American Magic, is in Auckland, New Zealand, to make sure that the Cup is part of its future as well.

On a path towards the America’s Cup since he was five years old, American Magic Trimmer Mac Agnese (Ft. Lauderdale, Florida) has a few things on his mind heading into the first race of his Cup career onboard PATRIOT.
“You can prepare as much as you want… but when you’re really on the boat you get all these brand new sensations that are unlike any other sailboat in the world.”
To be an America’s Cup sailor, you need more than just knowledge and talent. You need to earn the support of your teammates. You need to forget what you think is possible about speed and performance. And above all, you need to remember where you came from.
“This is the top of our sport and the stakes are high. Competing at the highest level means representing something bigger than myself.”

On December 17, 2020 in Auckland (December 16 in the U.S.), the four AC75’s will finally go racing: TE REHUTAI, LUNA ROSSA, BRITANNIA and PATRIOT.
Race Day at America’s Cup World Series Auckland will be 1,081 days after the New York Yacht Club challenged the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron for the Cup. The American challenge was issued seconds after entries opened.
Race Day will be 460 days after DEFIANT, American Magic’s first AC75, was launched in Rhode Island.
Race Day will be 62 days after PATRIOT first touched the sea in Auckland.
Race Day will be here in 7 days, and New York Yacht Club American Magic, the U.S. Challenger for the 36th America’s Cup, will be ready. © American Magic
It takes a special combination of skill, inventiveness, and cool under pressure to manage the flow of priceless data from the America’s Cup AC75’s sensors to the team’s analysis tools. From those tools come refined schematics for builders, lessons for sailors, and a better chance of winning.
Luckily for American Magic, Instrumentation Engineer Elvira Llabres has all of this covered for the U.S. Challenger. © American Magic
Each America’s Cup Challenger has a few key tools to work with: The AC75 class rule, fresh talent, proven experience and a finite amount of time. From these common ingredients grows a competitive philosophy that is unique to each team. For American Magic, the U.S. Challenger, this philosophy centers around a daily refusal to be outworked.

How do you go about coaching the best sailors on earth? How do you guide America’s Cup winners, Olympic champions, engineers, athletes, Ph.D.’s, artisans and innovators? All are essential to success, all are at the top of their field, and perhaps consequentially, all are problematic to forge into a cohesive unit. 12-time World Champion coach James Lyne weighs in:
“It’s going to be an internal struggle, this Cup, because you’ve got to have enough design power that you’re fast enough. But we’ve still got to be able to sail the boat well enough around the course to extract that potential,” says Lyne. © American Magic

As the team’s AC75 DEFIANT departs from Pensacola bound for Auckland, American Magic Skipper Terry Hutchinson reflects on the impact of the team and what bringing the America’s Cup back home could do for the sport of sailing in the United States. © American Magic
In September 2019, American Magic’s DEFIANT became the first AC75 to both sail and foil on the waters of Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island. Since then, the first of two AC75’s to be built for the U.S. America’s Cup Challenger has been in a “shakedown” phase, where the complex and cutting-edge systems have been tested and refined.
Also part of this groundbreaking period has been the shakedown of the human element; the training of some of the world’s first AC75 sailors. American Magic’s team of grinders, trimmers, and other specialists have been recruited from the best of Olympic, foiling, and previous Cup classes, but sailing onboard DEFIANT is unlike anything else.
With nine graduates currently among their boatbuilding ranks in Bristol, Rhode Island, the IYRS School of Technology & Trades is a key community partner for the campaign to bring the America’s Cup back to America.
Chasing the America’s Cup was never the end goal for Santa Clara, California sailor Sean O’Halloran. Instead, it was about pursuing ever greater skills, experience, strength, and endurance any way he could. From bartending in Newport, to the proving grounds of Oakcliff, and then on to a shore team position at American Magic, his mindset was to finish each day as a better sailor than he was in the morning. In June 2019, Sean was offered a chance to step onboard DEFIANT as a member of the sailing team… but only if he could pass a test that few in the world would even attempt.
To earn a spot onboard an America’s Cup boat, would you upend your entire life, home, and career, embrace years of training, sacrifice and uncertainty, have enough faith in yourself to pass one, final, decisive, grueling test… and then keep passing that test until the Cup is won?

Hinckley remains at the forefront of integrating the latest technologies. Carbon fiber has now replaced fiberglass. They were one of the first American builders to adopt SCRIMP resin infusion and today we remain a world leader in single bond infusion which allows for a single chemical bond between hull and support structure. With their move to PRO-SET Epoxy resin infusion this year, they are now building with a resin material of 40% greater strength and improved environmental benefits. Their time-honored and highly protected single bond, vacuum-infusion process chemically bonds carbon and epoxy from bow to stern for incredible strength and durability.
